A brief history of korean wave and kpop “the product of Asian exchange”
On Wednesday 11 November 2020,
the cultural center of South Korea in Indonesia, the Indonesian Korean Cultural
Center (KCCI) held a public lecture online through zoom with Mr. Hojai Jung as
a former Dong-a ilbo journalist who is an expert in Asia and Kpop who discusses
about a brief history of kpop culture and its economic impact for south korea.
discussing Korean history,
especially kpop, as you know maybe learning history is a little boring, but
history this time will not be boring because we will learn the history of kpop
and the media industry, especially Korea and several Asean countries, Korean
cultural centers in Indonesia hold lectures The general public, especially
Indonesians, as we know Korea and Indonesia are quite far apart, but the love
between these two countries is very much attached to the diplomatic relations
between Korea and Indonesia which only started in 1973 and the entry of Hallyu
into Indonesia began in 2002.
Kpop, not only Korean
musicians, so kpop is a kind of product from a combination of countries in
asean, the development of south korea has a strong relationship with kpop,
asean and kpop is a relationship that must be built for the future.
Modern history and social
development are very close to the area of national culture and politics, and
this national politics will be related to global systems such as foreign
diplomatic relations, kpop influences the economic system in Korea as well,
Korean society underwent changes in 1987 and was much better than before 1987,
so the period after 1987 had an impact on very slow economic growth and many
obstacles that appeared such as human rights violations.
At the time of 1980 the Korean
people loved listening to a lot of American cultural programs and music in
English, why did Koreans love listening to English pop, because at that time
pop was very developed and America as a very developed country a week American
pop was very global and their look is also really cool.
In the 80s Korean pop culture
was not very good because it imitated too many cultures from other countries
from all aspects, in the mid 80s Hong Kong pop culture entered South Korea and
this factor was also what finally could advance pop culture in South Korea.
So this kpop consists of the
korean system but korea imports a lot of foreign cultures into it such as
hongkong pop, european pop and japanese pop, so these factors help in
contributing to building kpop to be as big as it is today. But Japanese pop is
not very influential for South Korea because many South Korean people do not
like Japan.
The big momentum when it
occurred in 1997 was the economic monetary crisis in Indonesia and Thailand,
the South Korean state was very much affected by this crisis from all factors,
and South Korea tried to make changes for the better, the South Korean state
finally opened up to all countries This is trying to make South Korea known by
more people.
The k-pop background had its
beginnings in the 1990s, many popular entertainers today such as SM
Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and BIGHIT Entertainment, and they all have
talent and celebrity and platform providers such as character characters,
animation or film, and competition between agencies is certain. happens that is
competing to become someone to become famous, the competition of these agencies
also affects the South Korean economy.
