Jeju Fire Festival, festival yang sangat unik dan khas dari pulau jeju pada saat musim dingin tiba
Held annually to celebrate the first
full moon in the Korean calendar, this festival is a must-visit, Korea does
have a million festivals that are ready to present you all about Korea. As a
country that highly values tradition, every year various ceremonies are
carried out by all Korean people. One of them is celebrating the first full
moon in the Korean calendar, in Korean itself it is more often called Jeongwol
Daeboreum.
Jeju Fire Festival is a representative
cutural festival related to Jeju's culture of livestock care. In the past, the
village fields would be burned between late winter and early spring in order to
prepare the fields for a new harvest, as well as kill any pests in the soil. While
this practice is no longer used in modern times, the festival is still held to
remember and celebrate the culture. Various folk games and hands-on programs
are available throughout the festival period.
South Korean people also regularly hold the Jeju Fire Festival every year to welcome the new year. The hope is that this festival can be their prayer for them to stay healthy and prosperous.
The main focus in this festival is
praying to gods for good luck and health. The festival opens with the burning
of the Daljib, a wooden structure built year-round on the hill. The highlight
of the festival is burning the entire wooden structure, creating a huge fire
that will light up Jeju's sky.
The festival, which is held for four
days and starts on the first Thursday of March, is one of Jeju's winter
attractions not to be missed. In addition to welcoming the new year, this
festival is also a form of South Korean people's efforts to revive agricultural
traditions by ceremonial burning of fields to welcome spring.
What is unique about this festival
besides the main events and rituals is that for men you can test your strength
here. In the past, Korea had a unique ritual to measure male maturity, namely a
ritual called Deumdol. In this ritual you have to lift a stone weighing 130 kg
and carry it around, whoever can carry it the farthest will be considered the
strongest.
This tradition was reinstated by burning
the entire side of the mountain. Visitors who come can experience the life of
South Korean farmers, including traditional wedding ceremonies at the festival.
The festival will include a series of
events such as musical performances, competitions, and practical activities for
the whole family, including a folk market as well as a special cultural program
aimed at tourists from outside Korea.
