The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is held in a small village and is a world-class festival tourist attraction
This small village located in the
mountains has been transformed into a world center of attention with its winter
festival which is always enlivened by more than 1 million visitors each year.
According to the Hwacheon County
Government on Sunday, the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival has been introduced
to one of the US television channels, ABC, at the "World News Now"
program. The event is one of 138 news events in 34 countries promoting the
Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival.
Last year, Singapore-based television
channel News Asia also introduced the festival in one of its programs,
"One in a Million", as the festival was reviewed 109 times on news
programs in 24 countries. Hwacheon, which is located in Gangwon Province, is
known as the city of ice. With a population of only 25,000, this area is
located right next to the North Korean border.
More than 90 percent of the geographical
conditions of this area are mountains and rivers or lakes, while the population
occupies only 3% of the total area of this area. Given its proximity to North
Korea, this area tends to be like a military city, so the government has
prohibited any development or expansion. Just a 20-minute walk allows visitors
to tour the entire "downtown" area of this area.
Soldiers who are on vacation or soldiers
visited by relatives are arguably the only things that "turn on" the
only area in South Korea that does not have a four-lane road. Political and
geographic conditions require local residents to make a living directly through
nature.
Even so, this area is not only blessed
with mountains that offer a very beautiful view in summer, but also rivers that
freeze in winter, making it suitable as a unique tourist destination.
The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is
held around the Hwacheon Cheon Stream or natural habitat for trout and otters.
One of the most popular programs at the festival is fishing on frozen rivers.
Interestingly you can try to catch fish with your bare hands.
Take the opportunity to experience a
unique Korean winter festival in celebration of the Mountain Trout, Hwacheon
Sancheoneo festival! Follow the local residents for their annual pilgrimage to
the hilly countryside far from the city. Punch holes in the hard ice and fish
for fresh fish as part of this hundred-year tradition. When you get the catch,
cook it up to eat in the festival kitchen.
After that, spend some time trying out
the various ice activities on offer such as sledding, bobsled, ice soccer, ice
sculpting and many more winter fun. No need to worry, as it includes
transportation to and from the festival, this activity is highly recommended
for anyone looking to venture beyond the city and gain a unique insight into
Korean culture.
To ensure that visitors can catch and
taste fresh fish catches, there are several organizers who are ready to help
you at this festival.
