Hwajeon, a typical spring dessert in South Korea
Discussing
food is endless, South Korea, which is currently entering spring, also has
favorite culinary menus. Meanwhile, the food consumed by Koreans is a food menu
that can maintain health stamina throughout the year. A number of dishes are
also sought after by the people of Kimchi Country to eat while enjoying the
atmosphere of blooming flowers. One of the Korean people's favorite culinary
during spring, namely HWAJEON !.
Hwajeon
is a type of rice cake that is commonly used as a dessert or snack. This dish
is quite unique because of the sprinkling of spring flowers on top. Usually
hwajeon is sprinkled with flowers, such as azaleas, roses, chrysanthemums,
sakura, or pear blossoms. Hwajeon always appears during spring festivals in
Korea and is commonly eaten during hwajeon nori, a tradition that has been
passed down since the Goryeo Dynasty.
The
tradition of eating hwajeon is called “Kkeot Darim”, which takes place on
“Samjinal” day, which is the third day, the third month of the Lunar calendar.
Usually women go on excursions to the mountains with hwajeon cooking utensils.
Then they picked the spring flowers that grew around them and made hwajeon.
After that, they ate hwajeon together while enjoying the mountain panorama in
spring.
