The traditional dance "Ganggangsullae" a circular dance usually performed during ChuSeok
Just as the song Arirang is a cultural symbol in Korea, Ganggangsullae is also one of the cultural characteristics that shape society in this country. Ganggangsullae is one of the Korean folk traditions, which is called 'folk games' by the people.
Ganggangsullae
(강강술래)
is a traditional Korean art form that combines elements of dance with singing.
It is an ancient Korean dance that was used to bring about fertile agricultural
produce and eventually became a symbol of Korean culture. Interestingly, this
dance is specifically for women only. This dance is usually performed during
the Chuseok and Daeboreum celebrations. It has been recognized as one of the
cultural treasures in Korea and preserved its authenticity for generations to
come.
The
true meaning of the term algae sullae is difficult to identify, because it has
been passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth since long ago.
However, this term most closely fits the original wording of the Jeolla-do
dialect, where 'gang (gam)' means circle and 'sullae (su-re)' also means to
spin together. This formed the term algaesullae which carries the meaning of
spinning in circles.
In
the Joseon era, the female class had strict rules for making any art offerings
and exposing themselves. However, for ganggangsullae, only women are allowed to
join this dance because the male group at that time was prohibited from
participating in any rituals because of the Confucian teachings. When the moon
is full, women in the villages will dance ganggangsullae all night to celebrate
the Chuseok (new year in the Lunar calendar) celebration to expect their
agricultural produce to remain fertile throughout the year.
This
Ganggangsullae dance also actually gave a greater meaning to the women at that
time. Ganggangsullae is symbolic for them to release their anger and
disappointment towards patriarchal society during the Joseon era. At that time,
most of the people expressed their feelings in singing songs and dancing. The
Joseon female group sings a song for the algaesullae with lyrics that reflect
their lives as women of that era. The pain of life, despair, disappointment,
how to survive and the fate they received for being a woman have been revealed
through the algae.
