King Sejong Institute Center in Indonesia held a Korean writing and drawing contest event

On Thursday 2 December 2021, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea together with the King Sejong Institute Center and KCCI held the "Sejong Hakdang Korean Writing & Drawing Contest" which was held at the Westin Hotel Jakarta!  With two themes, namely "Writing Acrostic Poetry - Love Dokdo" and "Beautiful Korean Land".

Before this event started, we were given an explanation about the history of Dokdo Island and all of us present knew that Dokdo Island belongs to South Korea, Dokdo is an area attached to South Korea historically, geographically, and by international law.

Dokdo had been known as Usando or Gajido before, but in 1882, when the first residents settled in Ulleungdo, they started calling it Dokseom Island.  Because when they saw the island, which is mostly composed of rocks, the residents of Ulleungdo took the word "Dok", equivalent to 'dol' in their local dialect which means rock, in the end the residents named the rock island as Dokseom.  Later, when the Korean word 'seom' which means island, was converted to Chinese characters, the island eventually acquired the name Dokdo.

After being given an explanation about Dokdo Island, here we are given two types of competitions to choose from, there is a poetry writing competition and a drawing competition for the beauty of the Korean mainland.

What are the impressions of the participants who have attended and participated in this event? Here I interviewed a few participants who were very enthusiastic about participating in this event.

"This event tested the creativity of the participants in presenting their knowledge of the natural beauty of Korea, especially the island of Dokdo, both in the form of poetry and in the form of pictures/paintings. At the beginning of the event, we discussed a few reviews about Dokdo Island, and we were reminded again that Dokdo has always been a part  from Korean soil, Then there is also a mini-competition of dalgona candy, and at the end of the event each participant is given a tool to make dalgona, so you can try to make it at home. Hopefully in the future similar events will often be held so that knowledge about Korean culture can also be known to the wider community, not only Korean lovers only, Thank you!"

"The Sejong Hakdang Korean Writing & Drawing Contest event held by the Korean Embassy, KCCI & KSIC was very interesting and memorable for me. Yesterday I participated in a poetry writing competition. The difficulty was to compose words that could describe the hearts and feelings of Korean people's love for Dokdo Island  , because to be honest I'm not very good at speaking Korean. From the competition, I learned a lot even about the history of Dokdo Island itself and of course found various vocabularies that I might not have heard before in the process of composing the poem. In addition, because I haven't expressed myself for a long time.  through drawing and poetry, yesterday's event became a kind of separate space for me to express my longing to make drawings and poetry. And the most surprising and memorable part for me was when I was chosen to be a participant to take part in the Dalgona challenge (the side event of yesterday's event). Feeling nervous  and excited to mix into one. Time y  The time given was quite short which made me even more nervous, but I am happy and relieved because in the end I managed to complete the challenge without destroying the Dalgona candy. In the future, I hope that events like this will be held more often and on a larger scale.  So, more people can participate to express ideas in their best works, and of course express their love for Korean culture.  Thank you Korean Embassy, KCCI, and KSIC for holding this very exciting and useful event."
