Hangul day in Indonesia, you read below an explanation of the Hangul letters from
South Korea, happy reading
Hangeul was created by King Sejong the
Great. Subsequently, in 1446, Hangeul was presented in published form along
with detailed explanatory guidelines. Sejong named the alphabet Hunminjeongeum
("The right voice to teach the people"). This alphabet is now called Hangeul
which means "Alphabet Han" or "Great Alphabet". Although it
was recommended by the king, not many Joseon scholars would write with Hangeul.
Scholars assume that Hangeul is an alphabet
for women (eon-mun) because it's very
easy to learn. Scholars and aristocrats, mostly men, still use hanja. Female
writers known for works in Hangeul include Shin Saimdang (1504-51), Heo
Nanseolheon (1563-89) and Myeongseong (1851-95).
For most of its history, the Korean
people wrote in Chinese characters (Hanja). Because the speech languages of
the two nations come from different families, Korean cannot be properly
expressed in Chinese characters. In Chinese, sentences are marked with
particles, while in Korean, the suffix is used to add or modify meaning.
Although uncomfortable, the Korean nobility (yangban) continued to strongly
support the use of hanja.
King Sejong is a leader and scientist,
and a cultural pioneer. Through years of hard work, he researched the basic
Korean language unit using his own ability of language and finally succeeded in
writing it in the form of a character, Hunminjeongeum.
The writing in Sejong Sillok, volume
of Joseon Wangjo Sillok (Babad Joseon) on December 30th 25th year of the Sejong
reign, reads:
"This month, the King has created
28 Onmun (speech) characters in person ... Although simple and concise, they
are able to produce infinite variations and are called Hunmin Jeongeum. "
Based on "Explanations and
Examples of Hunmin Jeongeum" (1446): basic consonant symbols are formed
systematically based on the human mouth organ when uttering several types of
sounds, while other consonants are formed by adding strokes to the 5 basic
shapes.
