HWAJEON Dessert in South Korea


Hwajeon, Hwajeon is a kind of rice cake that is usually used as a dessert or snack. This dish is quite unique because of the sprinkling of spring flowers on it. Usually hwajeon is given a sprinkling of flowers. The most commonly used are azaleas, but roses, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, or pears can also be used as toppings.



Hwajeon was eaten at the time of hwajeon nori, a tradition that has lasted since the Goryeo Dynasty. At such times usually women will picnic to the mountain armed with a frying pan. Then they pick the spring flowers that grow around it and make hwajeon



Spring in Korea is the time for flowers to bloom and harvest time for farmers and fishermen. South Koreans believe that eating food harvested during the season, especially during spring will keep their bodies healthy throughout the year. Vegetables, fruits, and seafood taken in the spring have the best nutritional content when compared to other seasons.


They used to eat these foods in a fresh condition or used as a spring cuisine.
