South Korea's Step Successfully Suppress the Corona Pandemic
The WHO praised the way South Korea handled the
corona virus, both in curbing its spread and in treating infected patients. The
cure ratio reached 48%, while the death rate was only 1.5% on March 27.
Starting with one patient in early February, the
number of Covid-19 cases in South Korea (South Korea) jumped dramatically. From
an average of two cases per day, there were additional new cases of up to 900
people at the end of February. This is due to a 61-year-old woman who was later
identified as Patient 31. The woman had previously experienced symptoms in
early February, and was advised to rest and take a test.
But he still attended two services, which were
joined by thousands of worshipers at Shincheonji Church, Daegu, on February 9
and 16. He himself did the test on February 17 and was declared as Patient 31
the following day. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC)
estimates there are 9,200 people who took part in the two prayers. Around 1,200
of them claimed to have flu-like symptoms. No doubt from Patient 31 then formed
a new cluster of corona cases, as well as the largest and appear berentet since
February 20. Of the 9,137 positive confirmed cases on March 25, about 56
percent (5,080 cases) were connected with Patient 31.
Without waiting for time, the government of
President Moon Jae-in immediately set the city to the southeast of Daegu as a
"special disaster area". This policy is then followed by a series of
steps to overcome the spread of the virus that attacks the respiratory tract.
Bright spots appear. KCDC noted the increase in cases in the first week of
March 2020 fell to the range of 500-600 cases per day. Then down again to the
range of 100-200 cases per day the following week.
On March 23, 2020, there were only 64 new cases, at
once the lowest since the corona virus was plagued in the country. The strategy
adopted by the South Korean government is different from the isolation or
lockdown policies adopted by a number of countries, such as China in Wuhan,
Italy and Spain. South Korea has instead taken steps that involve full
community participation. The next step is suggested to be applied to a number
of countries whose cases are increasing sharply.
One of the keys to South Korea's success in
suppressing additional cases is conducting a free and mass inspection. That
way, positive patients with Covid-19 can be detected more quickly and get
treatment, thereby preventing transmission to many people. In addition to
clinics and hospitals, the government provides drive-thru inspection stations
in various cities. Health workers only need 10 minutes to measure body
temperature and swab the nose and throat of everyone who comes. The examination
results are reported one day after via SMS.
Within a day, South Korea can examine around 15
thousand people. As of March 24, 2020, 348,600 people have been examined. With
a population of around 51.3 million people, there are about 6.8 thousand people
who are tested for specimens per 1 million population.
Although the mass inspection has succeeded in
reducing the curve of the corona virus in South Korea, the government is still
on alert in case of a second wave of large cases. The reason, there are new
cases that are interconnected or form the spread of community. Especially those
that appear in churches, hospitals, offices, and sports centers.
Therefore, South Korean Prime Minister Chung
Sye-kyun stipulates the implementation of social distancing for 15 days until
April 3, 2020. This means that activities outside the home are limited, except
for grocery shopping or visiting a doctor. If you go outside, you must maintain
a distance of at least two meters from others. Chung said, as reported by The
Korea Herald, this step must be carried out by all residents.
The aim is to reduce the spread and the number of
corona virus patients below the capacity of health facilities. Previously, the
government only appealed to the public to be aware of implementing social
distancing. However, this step began to be forgotten, especially by the younger
age group, when the trend in the Covid-19 case began to decline. As a result
the government also applies coercion by imposing fines and criminal threats for
those who violate social distancing policies.
Effective communication is carried out by
authorities in South Korea by providing information quickly and openly to the
population. KCDC released a report on the development of the corona virus about
the number of cases and interrelationships between patients twice a day.
The government also sends messages to everyone's
cell phone regarding areas that have been infected. Thus, residents who are
forced to leave the house can avoid areas deemed dangerous.
Then if residents feel they have made contact or are
close to the patient, they can immediately check themselves.
