Commemorating the Day of the March 1st Movement (Samil Undong) in Jakarta, Indonesia
On
Monday 1 March 2021 (Korea Center) which is located around the Korean embassy
in Jakarta, in the opening ceremony, this place is planned to be used to learn
Korean for Indonesians and Koreans who want to learn Indonesian and not only
that this place will also be used to learn Korean culture, after the opening
ceremony of this place we all continued to the next event, which was to commemorate
the Korean movement on March 1 or called (Samil Undong).
In
this event we all also explained what was the day of the Korean movement and
also how the enthusiasm of the Korean people at that time tried to fight for
their country to be independent from Japanese colonialists, and we were also
briefly told about the history of this movement.
After
we all explained about the Samil Undong movement, we all participated in the
competitions provided, namely the Korean flag drawing competition and also
drawing the Korean peninsula from north to south, even though this event was
only limited to 15 people because of this pandemic era, but we are all very
enthusiastic about this event, because we as Indonesians feel very much in a
struggle where Indonesia and Korea are both colonized by Japan and our
independence day is only 2 days apart, South Korea is August 15 while Indonesia
is August 17 and in the same year, namely 1945.
The
Korean March 1 Movement or also known as Samil Undong struggled for South
Korean civil society to be free from Japanese colonialism. 103 years ago (now
2021), to be precise on March 1, 1919 millions of Koreans staged a
demonstration against the Japanese occupation.
Demonstrations
lasted more than 1 year from March 1, 1919. More than 1,500 demonstrations were
recorded against the Japanese occupation which had lasted 10 years.
It
is said that during the Korean March 1 Movement more than 7,000 of its citizens
were killed by the Japanese army and police. It is also said that more than
16,000 Koreans were injured, 46,000 were arrested with 10,000 of them being
tried and convicted. Coupled with the damage to houses and other
infrastructure.
Although
the Japanese authorities finally stopped them, the spirit of the March 1
Movement had spread throughout Korea. In fact, a Korean government was formed
in Shanghai which continued the self-proclaimed struggle for independence from
Japanese colonialists.
Until
now the March 1 Movement is still celebrated every year. March 1 is also
designated as a national holiday for North and South Korea.
