Korean Cultural Center Indonesia held a photo exhibition of the struggle for democracy on June 10, Republic of South Korea
On
June 9 to 15, 2021, the Korean Cultural Center Indonesia held an event, namely
a photo exhibition of the struggle for democracy on June 10, 1987, at Lotte
Shopping Avenue, Jakarta, in this event several photos of the sequence of
events or timelines of the struggle for democracy were displayed on June 10,
the Republic of South Korea, in the exhibition event. This time, the director
of the Korean cultural center Indonesia came and saw this exhibition in person.
In
this photo exhibition we are provided with information about the struggle for
democracy on June 10 in South Korea, the democratic movement in South Korea
that resulted in mass protests from June 10 to June 29, 1987. The
demonstrations forced the incumbent government to hold elections and instituted
other democratic reforms that led to the formation of the Sixth Republic, the
current government of South Korea.
On
June 10, the military regime of President Chun Doo-hwan announced his choice of
Roh Tae-woo as the next president. The public appointment of Chun's successor
is seen as a final affront to the pending and pending process to revise South
Korea's constitution to allow direct election of the President. Although
pressure on the regime, in the form of demonstrations by students and other
groups, had been going on for some time, the announcement eventually sparked
massive and effective protests.
Unwilling
to resort to violence prior to the 1988 Olympics, and (correctly) believing
that Roh could win competitive elections in any case because of divisions
within the opposition, Chun and Roh agreed to the main demands of direct
presidential elections and restoration of civil liberties. Although Roh was
elected president in December with a bare plurality, the consolidation of South
Korea's democracy is fully underway.
